Epilepsy is a brain disorder that causes a person to have a seizure. Seizures occur because of electrical signals in your brain is suddenly interrupted. These disorders can cause changes in your behavior, consciousness, body movements, emotions or sensations.
Seizures can be referred to as an "electrical storm" that causes the brain to do the things that person does not intend to.
Epilepsy affects nearly 3 million Americans and 50 million people around the world. It is usually diagnosed in childhood, especially during the first year. Rate of new cases gradually decreased until about age 10 and then became stable. After age 60, risk begins to increase again.
